Alex Jones Told His Audience That Dead Children Were Crisis Actors. A Jury Said That Costs $1.5 Billion.

On December 14, 2012, a gunman killed 20 children and 6 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. The children were six and seven years old. Within hours, Alex Jones, the host of Infowars, began telling his audience that the shooting was staged — a “false flag” operation using “crisis actors.” He repeated this claim for years, to an audience of millions.

What Happened to the Families

Because of Jones’s claims, the parents of murdered children were harassed relentlessly. They received death threats. Strangers showed up at their homes. They were confronted in public by people who screamed that their children never existed. Some families moved multiple times. Lenny Pozner, whose six-year-old son Noah was killed, moved seven times due to threats. Robbie Parker, who gave an emotional press conference the day after his daughter Emilie was murdered, was accused by Jones of being a paid actor. The video of Parker was played on Infowars over and over, dissected for “proof” that his grief was fake.

The Verdicts

The families sued. In Texas, a jury on August 5, 2022, awarded $49.3 million to the parents of Jesse Lewis, one of the murdered children. In Connecticut, a jury on October 12, 2022, awarded $965 million to 15 plaintiffs — families and an FBI agent who responded to the shooting. Combined with additional rulings and a later bankruptcy court decision, the total judgments reached approximately $1.5 billion.

Jones had already been found liable by default in both cases because he refused to comply with discovery orders — he wouldn’t turn over financial records and internal communications. The trials were only to determine damages. The juries saw the evidence of what the families endured and responded with numbers designed to be punitive: this is what it costs to build a media empire on the graves of murdered children.

The MAGA Connection

Alex Jones was not a fringe figure in the Trump ecosystem. He was a featured voice. Trump appeared on Infowars in 2015 and told Jones, “Your reputation is amazing.” Jones claimed to have been in direct contact with the Trump White House. He promoted election fraud conspiracies. He helped organize the January 6 rally. The same disinformation machine that tortured Sandy Hook families for a decade was the same machine that fueled the Big Lie, the insurrection, and the ongoing erosion of truth in American public life.

Bottom Line

Twenty first-graders were shot to death in their classroom. Their parents buried them. And then, for over a decade, they were told by a man with a microphone and millions of followers that it never happened — that their dead children were fake, that their grief was performance, that they were conspirators in a government plot. The $1.5 billion verdict was justice. It was also insufficient. No dollar amount repairs what those families endured. And the infrastructure that enabled Jones — the platforms, the algorithms, the audience that wanted to believe — is still running.
