Six Weeks After the Insurrection, Republicans Rolled a Golden Trump Statue Through CPAC. Made in Mexico. Shipped from Mexico. The Irony Was Lost on Everyone.

On February 26, 2021, the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) opened at the Hyatt Regency in Orlando, Florida. It was the first major Republican gathering since the January 6 insurrection — 51 days since a mob stormed the Capitol, five people died, and 140 police officers were injured. The party could have used the moment for reflection. Instead, they rolled out a golden statue.

The Statue

A 200-pound, gold-colored fiberglass statue of Donald Trump was wheeled through the convention hall. Trump was depicted wearing American flag boxing shorts, flip-flops, and holding a star wand in one hand and the Constitution in the other (the irony of the Constitution prop, given his later call for its “termination,” is noted). The statue stood approximately six feet tall and immediately became the centerpiece of the conference.

Attendees posed for photos with it. They touched it. Some appeared to worship at it. The biblical parallels — the golden calf from Exodus, built while Moses was on the mountain — were noted by commentators, clergy, and the internet within minutes.

Made in Mexico

The statue was created by Tommy Zegan, an American expat living in Mexico on a permanent resident visa. He spent six months building it. He is an American who lives in Mexico making golden statues of the man who promised to build a wall to keep Mexicans out. The statue was shipped from Mexico to Florida for CPAC. The man who ran on “Made in America” was literally worshipped through a golden idol made in Mexico. You can’t write this.

The Context

CPAC 2021 was not a policy conference. It was a loyalty test. The schedule was dominated by panels about “protecting elections” (meaning promoting the Big Lie), defending Trump’s record, and attacking Republicans who had voted for impeachment. The stage was shaped in a design that multiple observers noted resembled an Odal rune — a Norse symbol adopted by Nazi SS units. The conference organizers denied the similarity.

Trump gave the closing speech on February 28, his first public address since leaving office. He repeated the false claim that the 2020 election was stolen, attacked Republicans who voted for impeachment, and hinted at a 2024 run. The crowd cheered. The golden statue watched from the lobby.

Bottom Line

Fifty-one days after an insurrection. After five deaths. After 140 officers injured. After a second impeachment. The Republican Party gathered at a conference in Orlando and paraded a golden statue of the man responsible through the convention hall. It was made in Mexico. It held the Constitution. Attendees worshipped it. The party had a choice between accountability and idolatry. They chose the golden calf. And they’ve been bowing to it ever since.
