On April 1, 2026 — two days before Iran proved him catastrophically wrong — Donald Trump stood in the White House and delivered a nationally televised address about the Iran war. This is what he said, on the record, to the American people:
"They have no anti-aircraft equipment. Their radar is 100 percent annihilated. We are unstoppable as a military force."
— Donald Trump, White House address, April 1, 2026On April 3, Iran shot down a U.S. Air Force F-15E Strike Eagle over southern Iran. It was the first U.S. combat aircraft downed in Iranian territory since the war began in late February — and the first since the invasion of Iraq in 2003. Hours later, an A-10 Thunderbolt II was struck near the Strait of Hormuz. The A-10 pilot flew the aircraft out of Iranian airspace before ejecting and was rescued. The F-15E crew of two was not as lucky: one was pulled out within hours, but the second — believed to be a colonel-rank weapons systems officer — went missing inside Iran. U.S. forces launched an emergency rescue operation. A Black Hawk helicopter was hit by Iranian ground fire during the initial attempt. It stayed airborne. Barely. Iran cordoned off the southwestern region, state media urged Iranian civilians to locate and hand over any "enemy pilot," and offered rewards. The missing airman wasn't recovered until April 5 — two full days inside hostile territory — "seriously wounded," according to Trump's own Truth Social announcement.
While the rescue operation was active, while an American's location inside Iran was unknown, Trump's Easter Saturday schedule consisted of "Executive Time." He issued no public statement. He held no press briefing. He posted on Truth Social about the Friday jobs report, his CPAC approval ratings, and Iran's oil. The White House called a press lid at 11:08am and offered no public briefing for the remainder of the day.
Hegseth Said the Same Thing. A Month Earlier.
Trump wasn't alone in lying about Iranian air defense capability. On March 4 — a full month before the planes went down — Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth held a Pentagon briefing and said this:
"Starting last night, and to be completed in a few days — in under a week — the two most powerful air forces in the world will have complete control of Iranian skies."
— Pete Hegseth, Pentagon briefing, March 4, 2026"Complete control." Not "significant advantage." Not "substantial air superiority." Complete. Control. He gave himself a week. Thirty days later, Iran shot down two U.S. aircraft in one afternoon and hit two more during the rescue attempt. Iran's military said it used a "new advanced air defense system." Independent analysts noted that eliminating all air defense capability without sweeping the ground with troops is essentially impossible, regardless of how many strikes you run. Russia reportedly supplied Iran with thousands of Verba shoulder-fired missiles — one of Moscow's most advanced air defense systems — and provided intelligence on U.S. warship and aircraft positions. Some shipments are believed to have arrived before the war started.
2,076 Dead. No Congressional Vote. Now a Second Chokepoint.
The numbers the administration prefers not to discuss: at least 2,076 people have been killed in Iran since February 28. More than 520 U.S. troops have been wounded. At least 15 U.S. service members have died — six in a single drone strike on Port Shuaiba, Kuwait. A defense official told The Intercept the Pentagon has been providing misleading and stale casualty statistics in what was called a "casualty cover-up." The IRGC still retains roughly half its missile launch capabilities despite weeks of U.S. and Israeli strikes — directly contradicting the administration's public claims. None of this war was authorized by Congress. Not one vote.
Iran is now eyeing a second chokepoint. The Strait of Hormuz is already strangling global oil and shipping traffic. Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf posted a pointed public question about the Bab el-Mandeb Strait — the southern entrance to the Red Sea and the Suez Canal. He listed what transits it: oil, LNG, wheat, rice, fertilizer. He wasn't being academic. Iran's partners the Houthis control Yemen. They've used that strait before. If it goes, the economic consequences dwarf what's already happening.
Trump told NBC News the day the F-15 went down that it wouldn't affect negotiations. "No, not at all. No, it's war. We're in war, Garrett." Which is accurate. It is a war. A war he started, without authorization, that has now killed more than 2,000 people, wounded over 500 U.S. troops, downed U.S. aircraft, and is threatening two of the world's most critical shipping lanes — while the president posts approval ratings on a social media platform he owns.
