Trump fired Sally Yates because she would not tell the Justice Department to defend the first Muslim-ban order without being satisfied it was lawful. That was one of the earliest and clearest tells of the whole presidency: the department was expected to serve his politics first and its legal judgment second.

What Yates did

She instructed DOJ lawyers not to defend the order until she could be convinced the government should lawfully and ethically do so. Trump fired her that same night.

This mattered far beyond one personnel decision. It set the tone for a presidency built around punishing officials who treated law as something other than a branding exercise. Yates was not fired for corruption, incompetence, or sabotage. She was fired for refusing instant obedience.

That Pattern Never Stopped.

From then on, the message was obvious: independence inside the justice system would be treated like betrayal. That is how you end up with a government full of people trying to guess the boss's mood instead of doing their actual jobs.

Trump called that strength. It was just the first visible purge reflex of the administration.
